What Does Toner Do For Your Skin?

What does toner do for your skin anyway?’ Don’t worry, you’re not the first guy to ask this question and you won’t be the last. Though by taking the time to understand what skin toner is, you can take full advantage of this product and kick your own skincare routine up to a whole new level.

So,what does toner do for your skin? Below we’ve provided an ultimate guide to this popular skincare product, including the many benefits it can offer - check it out!

What Is Skin Toner?

Let’s start with the basics - what is skin toner, exactly?

Skin toner is a popular skincare product, designed to improve the tone of your skin. It’s usually used after cleansing and before using a moisturiser.

Toner works to provide the skin with a quick kick of moisture, remove any impurities from the skin’s surface, balance the pH of your skin, and clear rough areas for a smoother skin tone.

What Does Toner Do For Your Skin?

Now that we’ve covered the fundamentals, let’s get into the good stuff -what does toner do for your skin? Below, we’ve listed the key benefits that toner is known for. Take a look!

1. Cleanse The Pores

One of the key reasons why guys will use a skin toner is to clear any dirt, grime, or dead skin cells from the pores.

When our pores become clogged with dead cells, dirt, and bacteria, it can often trigger acne, blackheads, and whiteheads to suddenly pop-up. By toning regularly and cleansing these impurities from our pores, we can help to keep these spots away.

2. Reduce Pore Size

Not only is toner great for cleaning-out the skin’s pores, but it can also work to reduce pore size too.

Large pores can appear for several reasons, whether it’s due to skin stretching, poor elasticity, or excessive oil production trapping dead cells. Toner may be able to help by tightening and reducing pore size - stopping impurities from nestling their way into the skin.

3. Balance pH Levels

Aside from unclogging and reducing our pore size, toners are often used to help balance the skin’s pH levels.

Our skin’s normal pH is between 4 and 6 helps retain moisture and keep bacteria away. Though when our pH levels are off, our skin can become an environment where bacteria can thrive.

Toner helps to restore our skin’s pH levels - offsetting any alkalinity to bring the acidity levels back to normal.

4. Prepare The Skin

Because skin toner is great for clearing out any impurities from our pores, it can also help to make our other skincare products work better.

When our skin’s pores are blocked, our moisturisers or eye creams aren’t able to penetrate and work as effectively. Though with this debris flushed from our pores, our skincare products can seep deeper into the skin for better results.

5. It’s Refreshing

Sure, skin toner is great for cleansing the pores and balancing our skin’s pH levels - though many blokes often enjoy using this product because it’s so refreshing.

A quick splash of tonerin the morning or before bed is a great daily ritual to leave your skin feeling its very best.

How To Apply Toner

Adding a toner into your skincare regime couldn’t be easier - here’s a quick step-by-step guide below to get you started.

1. Get The Right Toner

When it comes to applying skin toner, the first step is choosing the right product - which will largely depend on the type of skin you have.

For example, if you’re working with oily skin you’ll need a toner to help with exfoliating. Or, if you have dry skin you’ll likely need to get your hands on a hydrating toner. Once you figure out your skin type, you can choose the right toner for your skin.

2. Wash Your Face

Since toner helps to get rid of any residue left behind from your face cleanser, the best time to tone your skin is after washing your face.

After cleaning your face with lukewarm water, dry the skin and start applying the toner while your skin is still damp.

3. Use A Cotton Pad

Start by dabbing the toner on a cotton pad - because they’re so absorbable, easy to manoeuvre, and can lightly exfoliate, they’re one of the best ways to apply toner effectively.

Though just be sure not to go overboard with the product, especially if you’re just starting with a toner - remember, less is more.

4. Focus On The T-Zone

Once you’ve applied the toner to the cotton pad, you can begin sweeping the blend across your face. As you’re doing this, be sure to focus on the oilier regions of your face, which is your T-zone (forehead, nose, and chin).

From here, all you need to do is wait a few minutes for the toner to dry, then you can follow it up with your moisturiser. Simple!
