The summer is fast approaching, so it’s time for you to stock up on sunscreen for those hot, sunny months. It’s not that you shouldn’t apply sunscreen every day, whether sunny or rainy, but having an assortment of scent-free tubes and containers will make it easier to use SPF no matter the season.
I spend my summers at home in California, lazing on the sand and dipping into the Pacific Ocean. It’s no secret that sunscreen application and reapplication is a process I take very seriously. Growing up near the coast, I was exposed to EltaMD and its range of sun protection products for all skin types and concerns at an early age.
My skin is dry and sensitive, but my olive complexion craves a lightweight cream sunscreen that absorbs within seconds without leaving a white cast. This seemed impossible at first. EltaMD met and exceeded my expectations and made the purchase and application of sunscreen enjoyable and straightforward. EltaMD’s facial sunscreens are my favorites. They get me through New York City’s dry, cold winter and the hot, humid summer.
I’m looking for light coverage…
It would be natural and dewy with a touch of bronze. When I use UV Restore Tinted Wide-Spectrum SPF40 when I run errands to protect my face from sun damage, I only need a little bronzer before I leave the house. This mineral sunscreen with a slight tint is my favorite because it camouflages imperfections. It blends out the slight but noticeable discolorations around my jawline and tones down my cheeks.
According to Muneeb Khan, MD, a Dermatology resident physician at Campbell University, North Carolina, iron oxides are responsible for the formula’s ability to smooth out dark spots. “Iron oxides help block visible light and prevent Hyperpigmentation,” he said. Robert Finney is a board-certified Cosmetic Dermatologist with Entiere Dermatology. He also recommends ginger root and saccharide isomerate as active ingredients to minimize dark spots. UV Repair Tinted Broad Spectrum SPF 40 not only targets hyperpigmentation, but it also helps to hydrate. Squalane is another critical ingredient that plays a vital role in the product. It naturally seals moisture into my skin without disrupting its sensitive skin barrier.
When temperatures start to rise…
UV Sheer Broad Spectrum SPF 50+ is my go-to product for those humid New York City days, if not just because it feels so lightweight when I apply a generous layer across my skin. Shah says that sunscreen blocks 98% of UVB Rays when properly used. It’s non-comedogenic, which means it won’t clog up my pores.
I always apply the EltaMD product line with two finger-length lines. But this sheer, shiny texture eliminates the possibility of me going overboard. After application, it’s almost as if sunscreen has melted into my skin. At the beach, I will add the quarter-sized amount to the high points on my face and hairline for extra sun protection.
Did I mention that it is also water- and sweat resistant? The sunscreen won’t wash off after a swim in the ocean or even a run along a beach trail. This makes sun-related activities more enjoyable because I know my skin is protected on land and water. After the recommended reapplication of 80 minutes, I can confidently apply another generous coat without hesitation. It’s a lightweight, silky formula that never feels sticky. You also get added sun protection without any white cast.
I get a lot of breakouts…
I’m most concerned about hyperpigmentation, but dry, red patches on my cheeks and laugh lines (caused by lack of moisture) are also a problem. After incorporating UV Clear Tinted Broad Spectrum SPF 46 in my wintertime skincare routine, I have seen a dramatic difference in my skin’s appearance and brightness.
Finney highlights two critical components in UV Clear Broad Spectrum SPF 46: niacinamide, and hyaluronic acids, which he claims calms and protects skin from inflammation. UV Clar Tinted Broad Spectrum SPF 46 is also a good choice for those with hyperpigmentation, acne, or rosacea. This sunscreen is an excellent choice because my skin can be dehydrated in some areas, particularly around my face. It protects my face from UVB rays, adding moisture and balancing out unwanted discoloration. This is a great base to use on days when I want to wear a little makeup or for brunches with my girlfriends. I have never had a problem with the product leaving patches or pilling, which is often a sign of a sunscreen layer on top of a full face of makeup. For those days when I choose to skip concealer, a few extra dabs of sunscreen on the cystic acne on my chin is an excellent sun-protected substitute for concealer. This sunscreen is capable of doing everything.
My skin feels as dry as a desert…
There’s no doubt that this year has been challenging for our bodies. Even indoors, my skin has experienced a dramatic change in its ability to retain and hold moisture. It could be my apartment’s air conditioner, which was on a high, or the fact that I spent so much time indoors this year. EltaMD Broad-Spectrum UV Elements SPF 44 has saved my skin from various causes.
Shah explains that someone with dry, irritated skin may benefit from wearing this sunscreen. Applying it daily can result in visibly plumper and hydrated skin. UV Elements contains hyaluronic (sodium) acid, a “humectant,” meaning it can hold 1,000 times its weight in moisture. Shah highlights dimethicone as an additional moisturizing agent. Dimethicone holds water within the skin and “further moisturizes and protects.” UV elements Broad-Spectrum spf 44 is a new standard for my skin. The results are excellent. I am amazed at the difference each time I apply it.
